More than a thousand years after the fall of the Mayan kingdom, the macaw is being reintroduced to the archaeological ruin sites.

In Honduras, the scarlet macaws were once nearly extinct.

Al Jazeera visited a sacred Mayan site where the macaw was symbolic of the sun. The macaw 'presided' over the ancient ball games.

The scarlet macaws have been released from captivity and are being slowly reintroduced to the wild so that they can freely fly and live amongst themselves like their ancestors.
