Authorities agents made a unusual discovery while patrolling a remote area of Starr County over the weekend.
Border Patrol agents told Action 4 News that they seized a parrot abandoned by group of people along the Rio Grande River on Friday evening.
Investigators told Action 4 News that Border Patrol agents were near the river when they spotted several people headed north.
The group fled into the brush but left behind a black trash bag.
Border Patrol agents looked inside and found the parrot hidden inside a beer box.
The bird was turned over to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Field Operations Office in Roma.
It’s not the first time wildlife has been smuggled into the United States in Starr County.
Border Patrol agents rescued two other parrots being smuggled in a bird cage in the Starr County community of La Rosita back in March.
