Sirocco, New Zealand’s celebrity kakapo has flown into Hamilton this afternoon ahead of a six week stay on Maungatautari Mt. Sirocco, who gained international fame when his frisky antics were filmed for a BBC documentary, is being hosted by the Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust (MEIT).
Trust general manager Malcolm Anderson said Sirocco's visit was a chance to raise awareness of kakapo, who number only 126 in the world.
He said the visit was part of a wider initiative to have kakapo on Maungatautari Mt permanently.
Sirocco, who is a nocturnal bird, will be shown during night time viewings in a specially built enclosure on Maungatautari.
