HONOLULU (KHNL) - The next time you take a stroll through Kapiolani Park, or around the Diamond Head area, keep an eye out for the red-masked parakeet. A small, colorful parrot native to the dry forests of coastal Ecuador and Peru where kiawe is plentiful. As a result, the birds feel right at home here on oahu.

Southerners will have the chance to see one of the rarest parrots in the world next Saturday when some of this season's chicks will be on display at the Invercargill Workingmen's Club from 10am to 4pm.
Conservation Department Kakapo Recovery Team leader Diedre Vercoe said being able to share the special birds with the public was a wonderful way to celebrate what has been an incredible breeding season.
"We are still buzzing about the population passing 100, and the rediscovery of Rangi (a male kakapo who had not been seen on the island for about 20 years) was another incredible moment."
A similar public day held last year at the club attracted more than 3000 people and Ms Vercoe hoped this year would be just as successful.

I’ve got an old wooden feeder in my backyard that has been around for years, and lately the weathered platform has become a popular gathering spot for a variety of colorful parrots.
The yellow-headed parrots were the first to show up last year, and since then a stunning pair of red-lored parrots have also been visiting.

Romeo visiting Juliet before Juliet's release on May 8 2009Two love-struck green parrots are soon to be united when Norfolk Island National Park and Botanic Garden releases its last captive green parrots into the wild.
The release marks the end of the green parrot captive breeding program, and opens the door to the courtship of 'Juliet', a captive female parrot, and 'Romeo', a wild male parrot.
For the past few years, Romeo has been regularly visiting Juliet and feeding and courting her through the aviary wire. But they have never been able to fly together.
The green parrot is an endangered species found only on Norfolk Island. In 1983, the numbers of green parrots had dwindled to fewer than 30, with only four known pairs of breeding birds. Today there are some 200 green parrots in the wild - a great conservation success story for an endangered species.
