The monk parakeets that have invaded Europe and North America over the last 40-50 years fortifying their massive communal nests atop utility poles in many urban areas appear to have originated from the same small area in South America, according to a new study.

Kevin Burgio remembered the first time he saw monk parakeets. He was out bird watching "and I ran across this puddle that had like five or six monk parakeets drinking from it," he said. "I'm like, 'What the hell is that?' Did someone lose like five parrots? I didn't know there were parrots here."
University of Connecticut researchers have discovered that preventing Monk Parakeets, an invasive species of parrot, from building huge nests on utility poles by blocking their access to the electric lines can reduce the risk of power outages and costly damages.
