Scientist says logging no threat to cockatoos
A WA scientist has added fuel to the debate over logging and its impact on endangered cockatoos as the Government seeks public comment on its draft forest management plan.
In a recent letter to the West Australian newspaper, WA Institute of Foresters chairman John Clarke rejected claims that logging affected Carnaby’s cockatoos, saying they mainly inhabited the coastal plain and Wheatbelt, not forests.
However, WA Museum ornithologist Ron Johnstone confirmed Carnaby’s cockatoos were moving west and south into the forest in search of food and nesting sites.
Logging back on the election agenda
Activists who spearheaded a grassroots campaign to protect old-growth forests ahead of the 2001 State election have again vowed to make logging a key issue at the March election.
Environmental campaigners, once again led by Perth fashion designer Liz Davenport, met yesterday to start a hard-hitting campaign against a plan by logging interests to sell up to 800,000 tonnes of native timber a year from South West forests for plywood, paper pulp and biofuel.
