Animal advocates oppose corella cull
An animal advocate group has weighed in on a proposed cull of corellas in Horsham.
Horsham council is considering culling hundreds of birds that are causing damage to property, roads and other wildlife near the Wimmera River.
But Lawrence Pope, from the Victorian Advocates for Animals group, has written to council, pleading with it to reconsider, saying it is inappropriate to consider killing native birds.
"I understand corellas can be challenging and trying, but to take their lives when they're inconveniencing some, not all, because there are diverse views in the Horsham area, to take their lives because they're occasionally inconvenient isn't an acceptable way forward," he said.
Mr Pope says culling rarely has satisfactory long-term outcomes.
"This approach to native animals is a really 19th century approach and isn't a way for the future," he said.
"It's a way of going back into the 19th century instead of trying to move forward to the 21th century and learning to live with wildlife."
Several Horsham residents have also written to council complaining about the proposed cull.
