Mayor in flap over the bird in his hand...
It’s not every day a little parakeet is treated like a VIP.
But this colourful cutie got special mayoral treatment after being rescued from the middle of a road by the Wyre Mayor’s personal chauffeur.
Cock Robin Lane in Garstang may sound like the perfect haven for birds, but this parakeet knows better after he was left fighting for his life when he collapsed in the middle of the lane.
Thankfully, the mayor’s attendant for Wyre, Peter Hutton, came to his rescue in his gleaming black Chrysler 300.
Mr Hutton said: “I was on my way to pick up the Mayor, Coun Russ Forsyth, when I saw him in the road. There’d been a car in front of me which had gone over it.
“It had its eyes closed and it was just rigid. I held it in my hands and stroked it to get it warm. I put the bird on a polishing cloth in the car and drove to pick the Mayor up from Garstang High School. When I came back it was flying around the car and I had to catch it.
“It’s had an official ride in the mayoral car with the Mayor now! Coun Russ Forsyth loved it, he’s decided it should be called Charlie because Charlie Adam was opening the sports hall at the school.”
The school’s caretaker gave Mr Hutton a little box and milk bottle top full of water to make the bird more comfortable as he carried on his chauffeured journey.
The father-of-four, from Fleetwood, has vowed to look after his new feathered friend.
He added: “It’s not wild, I think someone has probably lost it or it has escaped.
“He’s probably flown about, got exhausted with the cold and landed in the road.
“If I hadn’t stopped for it, it could have got run over.
“If no-one comes forward then we’ll look after it. We’ve already got a grey African parrot so we’ll buy a separate cage for Charlie.
“It’s brilliant, it’s a super little flyer.”
