Council to kill corellas

The council voted last night to adopt a corella management plan which would include killing about 200 birds and using noise to scare away the rest of the flock.
Cr Gail Kilby said: “We’re killing the odd bird to scare the other birds because they have a memory.”
About 18,000 corellas converge on Old Noarlunga between November and April each year, destorying trees, creating noise and leaving droppings.
The cull is expected to take place between November and January.
The management plan will cost about $70,000 - $60,000 more than what was spent in 2010/11.
It is the first time the council will shoot corellas since 63 were killed in the 2003/04 and 2004/05 seasons.
