Kaka parrot killed in protected area

KakaA dog has killed a fledgling kaka in what's supposed to be a predator-free part of Wellington.
Wellington City Council park staff have found the dead parrot in Huntleigh Park in Ngaio.
Biosecurity officer Bernard Smith says the park is part of a predator-free community and to see this sort of needless death is heart-breaking.
He says Kaka are a threatened species which need to be protected and this incident highlights the importance of keeping dogs on leads.
Council provides a number of parks where dogs can run off-leash, where native wildlife isn't at risk.
